Chesno Thanksgiving(?)

Yes, Thanksgiving! The whole world doesn't revolve around the US and it's holidays (but pretty much).

Today is Thanksgiving in Canada. Last year I spent it with my wife and son at the family cottage on the lake in Central Ontario. It was a wonderful time of good eats, fun with family, cutting down trees that would treaten buildings should they come down during winter, hauling in the docks, teasing the beavers, and going on hikes.

Simply wonderful. I hope they are having a great time despite not having my family there this year. I will celebrate nonetheless at home with at least a pumpkin pie. I did make sure to fly "Old Leafy" below "Old Glory" this morning in honour of the holiday.

"Old Leafy," huh? Never heard that expression before. I like it.

In some ways the Canadian date for Thanksgiving makes more sense than the American one. It's meant to be a harvest festival--but by late November, in most places, winter has already set in.

I feel the same way. The 4th Thursday in November is way too late. Here, in rural Cache Valley, everyone has closed up the fields, the gardens and everything relating to farming. It's cold, and it's over, yet Thanksgiving isn't for another month and a half.

It does spread out the holidays a bit though. In Canada, Halloween and Thanksgiving seem to piggyback on each other.

Old Leafy. Don't know if I made it up--may have heard it elsewhere, but I like it too. It was my sole attempt at humour in this post. Couldn't tell could you?
