You know those emails you get with the line at the bottom stating it was sent by a Blackberry? Well, this post was created on my Wii while I sat in front of my tv. Suck it Blackberry.

Mothers
Yesterday was Mother's Day. I am still here in Virginia of course and away from all four (deceased mother who raised me, birth mom, mother-in-law, and step mom) of mine. I was good this year. Sent cards to all three living moms and a package home for my wife. I mention this because in years past I haven't except for my wife.
A lady in church gave a great talk yesterday about being and having a mother. It really made me think a lot about how blessed I am to have so many wonderful women and mothers around me. Nothing profound or deep here. Just something I was thinking about.

Petrol
This week is week one of three where I study petroleum and water distribution. As a quartermaster officer I am in charge of everything from supply to cooks to mortuary affairs to parachute riggers to fuel and water distribution.
You'd be surprised at how interesting it actually is. I assumed that you drive up to the pump, squeeze the trigger on the handle and out comes fuel. There is SOOOO much more to it than that.
Did you know that you can fit more gas in your tank if you fill up in the cool morning than in the warmer afternoon? That despite what the Myth Busters say, a cell phone actually can ignite fuel vapors? That algae can grow in gas tanks that sit unused for awhile?
There's all kinds of other little cool things I learned. Others have said this is boring. Perhaps I am just weird.

Gory, Gory. What a Helluva Way to Die
Yesterday I got my dates for airborne school. I'll be in Fort Benning, GA from Sept 14th - Oct 2nd. I'm excited. Enjoy this video. The cadence is classic.

End of Cycle
Late last week we finished the school here in Oklahoma. I'm still here finishing out the equipment turn-in and out-processing, but training is done (except for the STD briefing we had today with all those fun pictures).
Our last week was spent out in the field. The hours were funny and a lot of the new soldiers complained about a lack of sleep, but it was no big deal to me. The second-to-the-last night we didn't go to bed until 4am. The next day we finally went to bed at 10pm and got up two hours later at midnight. We then went out on a 10-mile hike with 50 pound packs, weapon, field gear, etc.
I had no problem with it or anything, but found it funny to actually wake up 4 hours earlier than when we went to bed the night prior. Just glad the school is over. I'll be making my way to Florida on Friday to meet up with Jenn on Monday for a couple days of Walt Disney World fun and then up to Fort Lee, Virginia.

Murrah Federal Building
Two weekends ago I went up to Oklahoma City to visit Dan (good friend growing up) and Becca (step sister). We saw the sites there (read: Bass Pro Shop, downtown drinking district, and worlds first Sonic Drive-in). Most importantly we went and saw the memorial for the Murrah Building bombing.
I was on my mission in Ukraine when it happened so I never really heard much about it. Didn't even really learn that much while I was there as they charge an arm and a leg to go through the museum to heaven forbid, learn something. I did get a feel for the place though and sometimes that means more.
In the picture above you see the "chairs" representing each person who lost his/her life there. I didn't realize that they are sitting where the buidling was. I didn't realize they tore down the building and these trees are planted essentially in it's basement. The foundation in places is still in place and the site even though downtown was surprisingly tranquil on a freezing cold Saturday.
I found most haunting was a small area in front of where the building was. There were stairs and sitting areas, and places to hang out that were all original to the building including signs from 14 years ago which when you say it that way doesn't sound so long ago. However, there was a small grassy are there that was fenced off with a 4' fence. A sign read something like this: "This area was the playground for the children who attended day care at the building. Several of them died on the day of the blast." Now, go hug your children.

Finger
So, it's been 20 days. That's better than 9 months.
I'm here in Oklahoma now. Things are going well. However, last week my finger just went, well, wierd on me.
It started swelling up. I ignored it. On day #4 I decided to get it looked at. I went to the ER here on post on President's Day. It was grossly infected and swollen up with puss. I got a shot of novicane or some deadening injection on each side of the finger. That didn't do it. Another two shots. Then the doc started cutting. Then I told him I could feel it. Another two shots.
He cut my finger open pretty deep and squoze (sp?) out a bunch of junk. At one point he said, "I got it. The abscess pocket was pretty deep there, but I got it." Eww. Then he packed it and told me I had to go back every day for heaven knows how long to remove the packing and stuff new in the wound.
That lasted two days. I'm taking care of it myself now. Looking pretty good. Not hurting too bad. And, I don't have a doc stuffing junk up into my wound (Army docs aren't the most gentle around). Too bad this week we are doing combative training including a lot of wrestling. I'm sure that won't hurt my finger.

9 months? Really?
Ok. So, it's been 9 months. I figure now is as good a time as any to begin again. I am leaving for 5 months straight for more Army training. I leave in three days and will try to keep this up-to-date to let you know what I am doing.
Also, I will have a load of free time while I travel so hopefully I will see some cool things and be able to share them with you.
That's pretty much it. I haven't left yet so not much to update yet. Oh, except my sister-in-law is getting married to a pretty cool guy who is actually taller than I am. And, my other sister-in-law is moving in to keep my wife company while I am gone. So, you hear that bad guys? There will be two Madsen women in the house. Oh, and Wheezy. So, stay away.

Just 45 more minutes
Yesterday was a wonderfully rainy, cool, spring day. In the evening Jenn took the kids to Turner's soccer game and I went to help a friend who is building his new house.
We both got back about the same time and decided to crank up the electric blanket, bring the laptop into bed with us and watch something in bed in the electric warmth of our king-sized love sled.
I went to feed the animals and Jenn went to put the kids in bed while ours was warming up. When I came back in, the kids were in bed, the bed was warm, but Jenn was upstairs watching Lost on the big screen. She was 10 minutes into an episode. I said, "So, I have about 35 minutes or so before this ends?"
I grabbed some Star Trek and made my way downstairs. When Jenn was done she came down and asked, "So, are we going to watch Star Trek?" You know the way nearly any woman on the entire planet would ask that. That's how it was.
I responded, "No, we'll watch something we both want to see." She said, "Right now there's nothing I'd rather see than Lost."
"That's how I feel about Star Trek."
"I'll see you in 45 minutes."

In the can
OCS Zero Phase is now done. I will be attending the real OCS (Phases 1-3) beginning at the end of this month.
BTW, a jock with cup IS on the packing list. I was told just because there would be some hand-to-hand combat training, but I know the real reason.

OCS Zero Phase Drill #1
So, two weeks ago tomorrow I attended my first drill of officer training. I know, I know. It's been two weeks, but that's how long it's taken me to recover from it.
How was it you ask?
Imagine the worst place in the world to you. For some it may be a vegan dinner with Cameron Diaz. For others it may be an opera performed by Special Olympians that got the "Also Participated" medals--not even the bronze.
You there now? OK. Now, imagine getting kicked in the groin for two+ days straight while you're there. Also, you don't really get to sleep because of the groin kicking or anticipation of having to talk to Cameron Diaz in between bites of tabbouleh.
What was good about it? It ended. What sours that goodness? I go back for more in 3 weeks, and then again 3 weeks later, and then 4 weeks after that I go to South Dakota for 8 weeks of it straight.
I better re-check the packing list. I'm sure an athletic supporter (complete with cup), should be on the packing list.

Best Music Video Evah!
A lot of people will say that "Thriller" is the best music video out there. Although it is very good, that's just plain BS. THIS is the best music video evah!

Better?
So, I had my OCS orientation on Saturday.
Looks like all the same crap I talked about before will still come to pass, but instead of Alabama, I will be in South Dakota.
That's better . . . right?
